What We Do

Northwest Arkansas stands at a crossroads. Rapid growth and limited housing production are creating barriers for families and workers across the region. If we fail to act, we risk a future where only some can afford to live here, weakening the innovation and opportunity that fuel our success. By addressing housing challenges today, we can build a more balanced and sustainable Northwest Arkansas for generations to come.

Our Mission

The Northwest Arkansas Housing Coalition unites leaders, policy makers, residents, and organizations to give housing a powerful, collective voice. Together, we champion policies, partnerships, and community-driven solutions that expand attainable housing options and keep Northwest Arkansas avibrant region for all.

Our Main Issues

Infrastructure & Regional Growth – Insufficient infrastructure, poor regional coordination, and weak transit connections push growth outward and strain communities.

Policy, Zoning & Political Barriers – Outdated zoning, restrictive policies, and political resistance block new housing and reinforce sprawl.

Housing Inventory & Supply – The region lacks diverse and affordable housing options.

Affordability & Costs – High development, construction, and living costs are making housing increasingly out of reach for most residents.

Household & Community Support – Families face displacement pressures and need stronger programs to support financial stability and housing security.

What we do

Policy & Code Reform Advocacy - The coalition supports and advocates for updates to outdated zoning laws and building codes to allow more housing types, higher density, and mixed-use communities. By pushing for policy reforms that remove barriers, protect vulnerable residents, and modernize development standards, the coalition can make it easier and more affordable to build the right housing in the right places.

Public Engagement & Trust-Building - The coalition builds trust, counters misinformation, and engages residents through transparent communication, civic participation (like council watch parties), and clear ways for communities to support housing solutions.

Partnerships & Practical Solutions - The coalition can strengthens partnerships between city leaders, developers, and investors to reduce housing costs and expand innovative solutions, while also championing alternative transportation and access to daily destinations that connect housing with work, services, and community life.

Recruitment and support of development - Recruits and support candidates who support responsible growth.

Infrastructure & Smart Growth - By coordinating regionally, the coalition can address infrastructure limits, promote infill where systems already exist, expand transit, and map growth areas to reduce sprawl and increase sustainability.

Unified Regional Leadership - A housing coalition can bring municipal leaders, housing voices, and stakeholders together to adopt a regional mindset, align zoning and growth strategies, and create political solidarity for affordability solutions.
